pen and ink portrait of a pit bull mix

    "Bono"
    (pit bull mix)

One Saturday evening, a lady found a badly injured dog lying in her yard. Not knowing what to do for the dog, she brought him to the C.A.R.E. facility. It was evident when he arrived that he was the victim of long term abuse. Besides the many fresh wounds all over his body, there were many scars from previous injuries. It is speculated that Bono may have been used as a bait dog for pit bull fighting. Some of Bono's wounds had become infected and needed immediate medical treatment. He was also under weight and was heart worm positive. Even when Bono was at his worst, his loving personality showed through. The staff at C.A.R.E. realized what a wonderful dog Bono is and did their best to help him pull through. When Bono was healthy enough to be fostered, the Cammilleri's volunteered their home. It was not long before they realized that they could never part from this wonderful dog who had stolen their hearts. They adopted him and he has been a part of their family for over a year now.

There are many more pets like Bono out there that desperately need help. You can help by supporting your local no-kill animal shelter. They need funding and volunteers to keep in operation, as well as loving families to adopt the pets. Next time you are thinking of getting a new addition to your family, think of getting your pet from a rescue group or the pound. These animals are in desperate need of a loving home, and can make some of the best pets. Just ask someone who owns a rescue!

    About C.A.R.E.

C.A.R.E., Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort, is a non-profit 501(c)3 no-kill animal shelter located in Ruskin, FL. They are the only shelter in the Greater Ruskin area and run the only low-cost spay-neuter clinic for low income citizens. Volunteers are at the heart of the organization caring for animals as well as procuring funds/donations needed to keep the organization operational. Their purpose is to rescue, provide shelter, medical care and adoption of neglected, abused and unwanted animals. Since they opened their doors in 2001, they have been filled to capacity. Their ultimate goal is to reduce the number of dogs and cats being euthanized in Hillsborough County FL. To this end, they have adopted close to 1,000 dogs and cats since their inception and have spayed/neutered over 1650 dogs and cats. They are a small shelter but are very proud of their adoption and spay/neuter efforts. Operationally, CARE has historically concentrated its efforts in the local area and, with the exception of their low-cost spay/neuter clinic, have addressed the homeless animal situation one animal at a time within their limited resources. They receive no government funding and so rely on the generosity of their members, volunteers, individuals and business donors as well as special fundraisers (like the Ruskin PetFest) for financial assistance.
